Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has joined the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the second phase of IPL 2021, which is set to take place in the UAE. He replaces Adam Zampa, who pulled out of the tournament earlier. The Australian spinner has made himself unavailable for the entirety of the second leg of IPL 2021.
Wanindu Hasaranga, who recently pulled out of the upcoming Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2021, owing to national duties, impressed one and all with his exploits in the recent white-ball series against India. He won the Man of the Series in the T20I series, picking as many as 9 wickets. His four-for in the last T20 international helped his team win the T20 series 2-1.
In other changes, Sri Lanka’s Dushmantha Chameera replaced Daniel Sams. Australia’s Tim David replaced Finn Allenn as well. Allenn and Scott Kuggeleign will be with the New Zealand team while Kane Richardson and Daniel Sams are unavailable.
Head coach Simon Katich stepped down from his role due to personal reasons. He has allowed Mike Hesson to take over, adding to his role as the Director of Cricket.
Talking about the changes in the team, Mike Hesson said, “We have made some changes to the squad pertaining to the situation. We have come a long way and have shown steady progress as a team. The addition of Wanindu Hasaranga, Tim David and Dushmantha Chameera couldn’t have come at a better time during the replacement window, as we aim to continue with the momentum, building on our performance from earlier this year.”
Hasaranga has been one of the mainstays of the Sri Lankan team for the last few months. He has scored 534 runs and taken 25 wickets in 26 ODI matches so far. His presentation will address the woes of RCB’s middle-order batting and will be handy with the ball as well.
