IPL 2023: Delhi Capitals to likely approach David Warner for captaincy

David Warner could be the captain of the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming IPL 2023 season. The team is already making plans for the season, preparing for Rishabh Pant to be out for an undetermined amount of time after getting hurt in a car accident last week. The DC team’s management could ask Warner if he wants to be captain for the season.

Pant’s absence will be a big problem for the team because he plays so many vital roles for them. Besides being their captain, he is their first-choice wicketkeeper and a reliable batsman who can play in any position.

“Pant has been the mainstay of the middle-order,” The Times of India quoted a source as saying.

“Warner has the experience of leading IPL teams. The management will speak to him. The middle order needs an impactful Indian batter now.”

Delhi Capitals finished sixth in the standings in the previous season, and may possibly ask Sarfaraz Khan to play wicketkeeper to achieve a better team dynamic.

Since there is a cap of four international cricket players in a starting XI, even though they have an option in England’s Phil Salt, his presence would affect their team combination.

“Sarfaraz will be asked to keep wickets if the combination asks for it. Meanwhile, the team will be looking for a domestic wicketkeeper or a strong batter,” the source said.

Delhi Capitals’ star-studded bowling

Delhi Capitals boasts one of the best bowling departments in the tournament. The pace bowling consists overseas featuring Anrich Nortje and Mitchell Marsh.

Based on how Anrich Nortje and Mitchell Marsh have played in the past, it seems likely that they will start for the franchise. Mustafizur Rahman and Rovman Powell have also done well, so Salt would only be added if there were concerns about his fitness or form.

Delhi Capitals bought Warner at the IPL 2022 mega auctions last year. He parted ways with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the middle of IPL 2021, and after a string of losses.

Later, the team let him go because they wanted to keep Kane Williamson, Umran Malik, and Abdul Samad instead.
