After making history by becoming the youngest player in men’s cricket for England to take a five-for on his first game, Rehan Ahmed was expected to shine in the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL). However, the young man, who is only 18 years old, is said to have withdrawn from the IPL 2023 super auction in order to concentrate on his growth in red-ball cricket instead.
Brendon McCullum, who coaches the England national team, praised the young player and even urged him to compete in the lucrative league. This influenced his decision to join the league. Despite this, Ahmed made the decision not to participate in the 16th iteration of the Indian Premier League since he was thinking about The Ashes.
“That would be wonderful. It would be quite cool if he were to do that. Since I have some experience with the Indian Premier League (IPL), I can say that participation in the tournament is not always successful for the players. Why wouldn’t we?” McCullum discussed Rehan in an interview with BBC Test Match Special
In the meanwhile, Ahmed will be seen competing for Leicestershire in Division Two cricket with the intention of strengthening his place in the England Test squad. According to reports, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is collaborating closely with the county side in order to further develop his abilities. He has demonstrated a great deal of promise in the early stages of his career. It has also been stated that the English management has conveyed their desire to have Rehan prepare himself for the forthcoming season as an all-rounder.
Several English players drop out of IPL 2023
Now, it is not just Rehan who has decided not to participate in IPL 2023; numerous English players, such as Sam Billings, Chris Woakes, and Alex Hales, have also made this decision. Even though not everyone has stated a reason for the same, it is expected that Billings and Woakes wants to improve their red-ball cricket and will therefore stay out of IPL 2023. This is the reason why it is expected that they will stay out.
On the other hand, well-known English players such as Ben Stokes, Joe Root, Sam Curran, and Adil Rashid, along with a great number of others, will be available for purchase.
