In a breakthrough for all the stakeholders at the Indian Premier League (IPL), Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly has announced that the upcoming edition of the championship, IPL 2023, will be conducted as per the traditional home-away format.

IPL will return to its flagship home-away format after a break of three years. Since the beginning of the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic, the world’s richest tournament has been conducted at limited venues in a restricted bio-bubble environment.

Notably, IPL 2020 and 2021 were conducted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The 2022 edition came back with full enthusiasm for all the fans in India where debutant franchise Gujarat Titans under the leadership of Hardik Pandya seized the trophy.

In the 2020 and 2021 editions of IPL, the venues were limited to Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. In the 2022 edition in India, the championship was limited to four venues, i.e. Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Chennai.

Ganguly asserted the fact that the franchises will be consulted and the IPL will be conducted in the traditional format where each team plays one home and one away match against the opponent. Adding to it, Ganguly mentioned that the decision was taken as the pandemic seems to be under control.

Along with IPL, all traditional BCCI championships will be held in home and away format. The BCCI is also geared up for hosting the inaugural edition of the Women’s IPL. The tournament will take place after the conclusion of the Women’s World Cup in March 2023 in South Africa.

Ganguly said that by introducing Women’s IPL, BCCI aims to raise the standard of Women’s cricket in India at the domestic level. The schedule of the much-anticipated edition of IPL 2023 will be announced soon.
