IRE vs IND: Stephen Doheny and Conor Olphert, both uncapped, have been included in Ireland’s 14-man team for the two T20Is against India at home. While the two players were chosen based on their recent club form, allrounders Simi Singh and Shane Getkate were left out of the side that competed in the T20 World Cup Qualifier earlier this year.
Top-order hitter Doheny has 158 runs at an average of 52.67 in the Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy competition. Pacer Olphert, who travelled to the UAE with the senior team as a net bowler last year, has six wickets in the T20 league and six more in the List A format this season. Cricket Ireland recently signed both players to retainer contracts, and they now play for the Andrew Balbirnie-led side.
“There aren’t many bigger trials for a new national coach than starting your term against the world’s top-ranked T20I side, India,” remarked Andrew White, Chair of National Men’s Selectors.
“The T20I squad has a familiar core, but it’s pleasing to see a number of new faces gain call-ups, including Stephen Doheny and Conor Olphert. Both Warriors’ players have impressed at the inter-provincial level this season with regular performances, while Doheny has also returned from a successful tour of Namibia with the Ireland Wolves. Olphert has bowled rapidly, notably on good wickets at Comber last month, and his selection allows us to consider him as a tactical option given the rest of the year.”
The two games, planned for June 26 and 28, will kick off a long and exciting summer for Ireland, which will also include visits from New Zealand, South Africa, and Afghanistan.
IND vs IRE Ireland Squad: Andrew Balbirnie (C), Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Stephen Doheny, Josh Little, Andrew McBrine, Barry McCarthy, Conor Olphert, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young.
