Jasprit Bumrah is expected to be selected for the playing XI in preparation for some crucial match time against Australia in the second T20I. Bumrah (28), who participated in an ODI against England on July 14, has been sidelined ever since. He was unexpectedly left out of the starting lineup for Tuesday’s opening T20I against Australia in Mohali. Even though he was in contention for the World Cup (September 20).

Since he hasn’t been active for the past two months due to a back issue, there have been some rumours that the pacer hasn’t fully recovered. However, it is understood that there were no such worries. The only reason he did not participate in the opening contest was that the club management did not want to press him into action right away following a layoff due to injury. As of right now, he will play in the second T20I on Friday, September 23, in Nagpur.

“The team management did not want to rush him and that is the reason for his absence in the Mohali game,” said a source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), well conversant with the development. “He has been bowling full blast at the nets and he is ready for action,” the source further said. Since Wednesday was the team’s travel day, there were no nets at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur. Umesh Yadav may need to make a way even if the Nagpur stadium is his home field should Bumrah make the starting lineup.

Hardik Pandya threw some light into the team’s thinking and approach towards Jasprit Bumrah. “So Jasprit not being there obviously makes a big difference. Even if he is not there, (and as) he is coming back after an injury, it is important for him to get enough time to kind of come back. Maybe (he should) not put pressure on himself in whichever game he comes back and plays,” said the India all-rounder. At the opening match in Mohali India was unable to contain a big total of 208. In the three-game series, Australia is up 1-0.
