IND vs BAN: India’s Test squad now includes left-arm bowler Jaydev Unadkat for the forthcoming Test series against Bangladesh. Cricbuzz claimed that Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the series owing to bowling arm tension, and in his place, Unadkat, who bowled Saurashtra to the Vijay Hazare Trophy win, has been selected. India will be playing Bangladesh in two Tests.
If he gets to play in any of the Tests in Bangladesh, Unadkat will break Parthiv Patel’s record for the longest interval between two Tests by an Indian player. The left-arm pacer, now 31 years old, had his lone Test appearance in 2010 in Centurion, South Africa, against the Proteas. He has since appeared in seven One-Day Internationals and ten Twenty20 Internationals but has never been considered for the five-day format.
While bringing in Unadkat in lieu of Shami isn’t necessarily a like-for-like replacement, sources within the BCCI have told Cricbuzz that the veteran pacer was selected based on his recent performance. In the just-finished Vijay Hazare Trophy, he took the most wickets, 19 wickets in 10 matches, more than anyone else.
Unadkat, one of the most successful pacers in Indian domestic cricket, has 353 wickets in 96 matches, including a record-breaking 2019-20 Ranji Trophy season in which he scalped 67 wickets to assist Saurashtra to win their first Ranji Trophy.
Also, the experienced pacer has shown a lot of maturity in every format, and the outgoing selection committee came near to picking him for the Indian team several times. Rajkot-based Unadkat will join India in Dhaka by Sunday.
The Indian team has suffered major setbacks in the form of injuries of its players including captain Rohit Sharma. It’s unclear if the skipper will miss the series. Rohit, who injured his thumb in the second ODI in Dhaka on December 7, may play in the second Test (December 22-26). First Test (December 14-18), KL Rahul will lead.
Abhimanyu Easwaran, who captained India A in two matches that ended Friday, may back up Rohit in the first Test.
