JK vs GG: Jaffna Kings have made a winning start to their new campaign as they beat Galle Gladiators by 24 runs on Monday. The batting unit didn’t fire as they were restricted to just 137 runs in the first innings.
The likes of Dhananjaya de Silva (29 off 19), Shoaib Malik (30 off 27), and D Wellalage (30 off 20) made notable contributions but none of the batters could go on to play a big knock.
For Galle Gladiators, it was a combined bowling effort from the team. Five bowlers, namely Wahab Riaz, Imad Wasim, N Pradeep, N Thushara, and Iftikhar Ahmed picked two wickets each.
However, the Kings bowled exceedingly well as they bundled out Galle Gladiators for just 113 runs in the second innings. Kusal Mendis scored a valuable half-century but he didn’t receive any support whatsoever.
Jaffna bowlers overwhelm Gladiators
As many as seven batters got out on single-digit scores. The openers started positively and it looked like the Gladiators would win the game pretty comfortably.
However, once the opening partnership broke, wickets fell in short succession. The likes of Azam Khan (5), Subasingha (2), and Iftikhar Ahmed (6) failed to hit the straps as the Gladiators fell from 58 for 1 to 100 for 6. In the end, they were 24 runs short of the target.
As for Jaffna Kings’ bowling attack, Binura Fernando starred with the ball, picking 3 for 22 in 3 overs. Besides, the likes of Vijaskanth (2 for 20) and Maheesh Theekshana (1 for 24) also made handy contributions with the ball.
Jaffna Kings would next be playing against Dambulla Giants, while Galle Gladiators will take on Kandy Falcons. Both matches will take place on Wednesday.
