JK vs KF: Defending champions Jaffna Kings have, once again, made their way into the final of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2022. Kings defeated Kandy Falcons by 24 runs in the Qualifier 1 match on Wednesday at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Batting first, Kandy Falcons registered a pretty good score of 143 runs in the first innings.

Man in form, Andrew Fletcher got out early, which was a big setback early on. Pathum Nissanka and Kamindu Mendis then steadied the ship by stitching a 61-run stand for the second wicket. However, V Vijaskath then broke the partnership by rattling the stumps of Pathum Nissanka. In the same over, he also sent Mendis back to the hut to help his team have an upper hand at the end of the halfway stage of the innings.

Wickets kept falling at regular intervals, thereafter, as the Falcons managed to score 73 runs in the last 10 overs. The likes of Najibullah (22 off 17) and Ashen Bandara (13 off 13) got starts but couldn’t make a strong finish.

Rain guarantees the victory for Kings

As for Jaffna Kings, Vijaskanth was the star with the ball as he claimed 3 wickets for 40 runs in 4 overs. In reply, Gurbaz and Avishka Fernando started off strongly. Both the batters took the aggressive route and hit 26 runs in just 10 balls into the innings.

However, Brathwaite sent Gurbaz (10) back to the hut to get the first breakthrough. In his next over, the West Indies all-rounder also picked the wicket of Avishka Fernando (21 off 11). However, till that time, the Jaffna Kings had scored 54 runs. Afif Hussain (14 off 9) got out on the last ball of the fifth over but the Kings had amassed 62 runs by that stage.

Samarawickrama (15 off 15) and Dunith Wellalage (19 off 23) had stitched a 38-run partnership for the fourth wicket and helped the team score 98 for 3 wickets. Rain interrupted the play, thereafter, and the Kings, eventually, won the game by 24 runs (DLS Method).
