England Test skipper Joe Root has confirmed participating in his side Yorkshire’s Vitality Blast opener match on Wednesday. Root will play his first T20 match since May last year when Yorkshire faces Nottinghamshire on Thursday.

Yorkshire head coach Andrew Gale confirmed the news on the club’s official website by saying: “We’re going to have Joe back for Thursday. I spoke to Rooty last night, and he’s chomping at the bit. I’m not quite sure how many games he will play,”

“He’s definitely going to play on Thursday. England are making a selection on the Australian T20 series on Sunday night. So he might play on Sunday (Derbyshire at home) and Monday (Notts away) as well. Everything’s a bit up in the air,” he added.

Root has had a decent record in T20 cricket as he was England’s leading scorer during the 2016 T20 World Cup. He scored 249 runs in six matches with two of the most crucial knocks. He smashed 83 runs off 43 balls against South Africa and 54 off 36 balls against West Indies.

Under Root’s captaincy, England recently won the Test series against West Indies, followed by the recently concluded Pakistan’s series by 1-0.
