In a major jolt to the English Cricket Board (ECB), frontline batsman Jonny Bairstow sustained a freaky lower limb injury and has been ruled out of the third test against South Africa at the ongoing LV Insurance Test series. Notably, the series is currently tied at 1-1 and the arch-rivals will battle it out in the decider on Thursday.

Jonny Bairstow will also miss the much anticipated T20 World Cup 2022 that is scheduled to take place in October in Australia. England announced their squad for the T20 World Cup on Friday and Bairstow remained unavailable for selection. He will also miss the crucial seven-match T20I series against Pakistan.

The veteran batsman got involved in a reckless accident while playing Golf in Leeds on Friday. Bairstow will likely approach a specialist surgeon in the coming week to ascertain the extent of his injury and avail the necessary treatment. Meanwhile, ECB mentioned that they will be closely monitoring Bairstow’s injury, recovery and rehabilitation.

Bairstow, England’s ace batsman in the ongoing season played a number of stunning knocks against India, New Zealand and South Africa. He would have been England’s bankable asset at the crucial international fixtures scheduled in the coming weeks.\

Ben Duckett replaces Bairstow

Meanwhile, Bairstow has been replaced by Nottinghamshire batsman Ben Duckett who will likely make his debut in the final test against South Africa. The third test is scheduled to start on September 8 at the Kia Oval.

The ECB announced England’s 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup today. Jos Buttler will lead the side where Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood have been recalled for their respective national duty. However, the availability of Bairstow has sparked a tedious task for the ECB and his replacement will be announced soon.
