New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has now become the top-ranked batsman in Test cricket after delivering a match-winning performance in the Boxing Day Test match against Pakistan.

Williamson moved up the ranking in the ICC Test Batting Rankings, surpassing Indian skipper Virat Kohli and Australian star batsman Steve Smith to acquire the first spot. He was placed in the third position before New Zealand’s Boxing Day Test victory.

The New Zealand skipper has played a brilliant knock of 129 runs during the first innings of the hosts and added 21 runs to the total in the second innings. New Zealand won the match by 101 runs and Williamson was declared as the Player of the Match. His stint earned him 13 rating points.

Before Williamson acquired the title of the No. 1 Test batsmen, Virat Kohli and Steve Smith took turns in occupying the position. The Indian captain is now ranked No. 2, with a rating of 879, and Smith has moved down to the third position.

Kohli played only the first match of the four-match Test series of India versus Australia and took paternity leave for the remaining three matches, stifling his individual progress. On the other hand, Smith got demoted in the ranking table owing to his single-digit scores during the Test series so far. He registered runs of only 0 and 8 during the second Test clash between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The fourth spot in the Test Batting Rankings is occupied by Australia’s Marcus Labuschagne, with the rating point of 850, while Babar Azam of Pakistan ranks fifth with a rating point of 789.

Ajinkya Rahane’s unparalleled captaincy and batting performance during the second Test secured team India’s victory while also allowing the player to move up in the Test rankings. He has now clinched the sixth position.
