Frontline Indian batsman KL Rahul will miss the upcoming three-match T20 International series against West Indies. Selectors had earlier named Rahul in the squad, however, he couldn’t partake as he tested positive for COVID-19.
Though Rahul is out of isolation, he will have to go through a series of tests at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore. Only after passing the mandatory tests, Rahul will be declared fit to rejoin the team.
Rahul was scheduled to undergo the fitness tests a week prior. However, he tested positive for Covid following which he couldn’t appear at the NCA. The T20I series against West Indies is scheduled to start on July 29 and coming out of isolation today, Rahul does not have enough time to clear the tests.
Senior Indian players Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik have reached the Caribbean island for the T20I series. Therefore, the BCCI has confirmed that it will announce no replacement for the stalwart opening batsman.
KL Rahul will have to provide a couple of negative RT-PCR tests to sit for the tests. Rahul has to show signs of recovery as he underwent a sports hernia injury surgery in Germany last year.
Rahul looked in amazing touch and went through a number of drills before heading towards the gym at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. He also practised at the nets and faced women’s pacer Jhulan Goswami.
KL Rahul will likely join the Indian contingent in the United States of America for the final two T20I of the series. The Indian opener had an amazing time in the States when India played West Indies last year. Here is India’s squad for the T-20I series:
