At the mini-auction for the IPL 2023, which took place on December 23 in Kochi, the Kolkata Knight Riders meant some serious business. The two-time champions were unable to repeat their success from the previous year due to their uneven play and a lower net run rate than their competitors.
KKR had a total of 11 player spots and a purse worth 7.05 crore Indian Rupees heading into this year’s auction (eight Indian and three overseas players). They let go of the majority of their players, including names like Pat Cummins and Sam Billings. Cummins made himself unavailable to focus on national duties, and Billings backed out of the auction. Other players who were let go include Aman Khan, Shivam Mavi, Mohammad Nabi, Chamika Karunaratne, Aaron Finch, Alex Hales, Abhijeet Tomar, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Sharma, Baba Indrajith.
In a deal with the Gujarat Titans, the team captained by Shreyas Iyer acquired bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur from the Delhi Capitals in exchange for New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson and Afghan wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
KKR bought Shakib Al Hasan for 1.5 crore, which is the highest they paid to acquire a player in their team in IPL 2023 auctions.the
