A special proposal by Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) and the Victorian government has been put up to Cricket Australia. MCC has shown interest in hosting a neutral Test match between rival nations India and Pakistan at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The arch-rivals last played a Test match against each other in 2007. India and Pakistan did not play a bilateral series against each other since 2013. The teams just faced each other in Asia Cups and World Cups where the games gained intense popularity. The proposal was put forward to Cricket Australia after the MCG was filled with 90,293 fans in November to watch the epic face-off between India and Pakistan in T20 World Cup. The game alone witnessed 256 million viewing hours in India as the Men in Blue won the last ball thriller.

As per ICC’s Future Tours Program between 2023 and 2027, right now there seems to be no plan to host any game between the two nations.

“Absolutely. Three (Tests) in a row would be lovely at the MCG. You’d fill it every time. We have asked. We’ve taken that up with Cricket Australia. I know the (Victoria) government has as well. Again, it’s enormously complicated from what I can understand, amongst a really busy schedule. So, I think that’s probably the greater challenge,” MCC CEO Stuart Fox said.

“I’ve never seen anything like it at the MCG, that India-Pakistan game was something else, the atmosphere, I’ve never felt it like that. The noise after every ball was just phenomenal and the families and children and everyone enjoying it,” he added.

CA issued a statement on the idea

Further, a representative of Cricket Australia disclosed, “It would be up to the two countries to agree. But if there were to be a Test between India and Pakistan on neutral territory, we would of course be interested in the opportunity to host it in Australia. The supporters of the two teams here for the World Cup were amazing and the vast majority of those fans live in Australia.”

For many years now, cricket fans across the world have been looking forward to witnessing a historic series between India and Pakistan, apart from the World Cup and Asia Cup fixtures.
