Women’s Big Bash League team Melbourne Stars have appointed Trent Woodhill as their new head coach, the club announced on Tuesday (May 2).

Trent Woodhill, who was associated with the club as former associate coach in BBL, replaces David Hemp for the position of a head coach. His role as a list manager across WBBL and BBL teams is now up for trade.

Former Australia opener Leah Poulton was initially named as Heap’s replacement in March. However, in less than a month, she quit to take up the position of Head of Female Cricket at Cricket NSW, leaving the head coach role for grabs.

“It’s a great opportunity and one I’m looking forward to getting stuck in to,” Woodhill said. “I’ve been involved with the Stars for many years now and know the environment and the ethos well. We’re backing ourselves to bounce back from some of the results in recent WBBL seasons. The competition is only getting stronger and we need to be stronger too. I’d certainly like to see a maiden finals appearance this season and win the title but there is plenty of work to do first.”

Apart from straddling between his two roles with the Stars, Woodhill has also worked with the renowned IPL teams – Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils in 2008-09. That particular year even saw his contribution towards Cricket NSW and New Zealand Cricket. That’s not all – he was also the batting coach to Australian opener Alyssa Healy.

“Trent is well known to everyone at the Stars and in the Big Bash more broadly,” Cricket Victoria general manager of cricket Shaun Graf said. “I’m pleased he’s accepted this opportunity to move into a head coach position with the WBBL squad.”

Being the head coach for the club, one of the major challenges for Woodhill will be to take the Stars to final of the WBBL, which in five seasons so far, hasn’t happened.

Cricket Australia seemed to have some serious thoughts on having a reduced season for cutting the costs down. However, it is unlikely to remain the case.
