County cricket club Somerset on Tuesday confirmed of signing the South African pacer Merchant de Lange for next two seasons.

The 31-year-old has joined the club for all the formats of the game as an overseas player until the end of 2022 season. Previously, Merchant de Lange had spent the last four seasons at Glamorgan as a UK based player due to spousal visa.

The pacer has been a consistent in his last few outings and manages to clock 150kmph on regular intervals. Somerset have signed him as the replacement of their quick bowler Jamie Overton who signed with Surrey during the 2020 season.

“It is a huge privilege for me to be joining Somerset and I can’t wait to start my journey with such an ambitious and proud club,” de Lange said.

“I am very excited of the prospect of being part of a formidable team and striving towards winning multiple competitions and silverware” he added.

“It is very noticeable how well supported the club is and I am really looking forward to meeting the members and supporters hopefully on their safe return in 2021,” he concluded.

De Lange had made his national debut for South Africa in 2011 and took 7/81 against South Africa in 2011-12. So far, he has played only 12 matches for South Africa across all formats before moving to England to play in the County Cricket.
