The 16th edition of the world’s richest Indian Premier League (IPL) is round the corner and will kickstart in the initial week of April. The Auctions for the 2023 edition of IPL concluded in the penultimate week of December. As expected, the auctions stood out to be too expensive as all the franchises had bid fiercely to bag their desired cricketers.

The 2023 Auctions in Kochi broke multiple records and we now have a revised list of the costliest players in IPL, the first four of the top 10 list being from the current season.

Let’s find out the most expensive players in the history of IPL:

1. Sam Curran (2023)  Rs. 18.5 Crores: Punjab Kings

Ace England all-rounder Sam Curran broke all the records and became the most expensive player in the history of IPL. Curran was bought by Punjab Kings for a whopping Rs. 18.5 crores ahead of the 2023 edition of the championship

Curran had already caught the attention of all the franchises after his stunning stint at the T20 World Cup where he won the award for Man of the Tournament. Thus, the left-arm all-rounder received extensive bidding from Punjab, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad.

2. Cameron Green (2023) Rs. 17.50 Crores: Mumbai Indians

Cameron Green became the second most expensive player in the history of IPL ahead of his debut season in 2023. Green was bought by Mumbai Indians for a thumping Rs. 17.50 crores after an intensive battle against Bangalore and Delhi Capitals.

Cameron Green is a fascinating all-rounder for Australia. He recently made his national debut and has so far scored with a marvellous strike rate of 173.75.

3. Ben Stokes (2023) Rs. 16.25 Crores: Chennai Super Kings

Veteran England all-rounder Ben Stokes bagged the title of being the third most expensive player in the history of IPL auctions. Stokes was grabbed by the Chennai Super Kings for a stunning Rs. 16.25 crores to strengthen their all-round department after the release of Sam Curran.

Another prominent reason why Chennai bid heavily on Stokes is to imply a smooth transition in their captaincy reign as incumbent skipper MS Dhoni will likely retire soon.

4. Chris Morris (2021)  Rs. 16.25 Crores- Rajasthan Royals

South African all-rounder Chris Morris had been the most expensive IPL player back in 2021 when Rajasthan Royals bagged his services for Rs. 16.25 crores. Morris had a miraculous auction where he was bought for 21 times his base price of Rs. 75 Lakhs.

Morris had an amazing debut season for Rajasthan where he emerged as the highest wicket-taker. However, his efforts deteriorated in 2022 after which he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

5. Nicholas Pooran (2023)  Rs. 16 Crores- Lucknow Super Giants

Caribbean powerhouse Nicholas Pooran was bought by the newly inducted IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants for a whopping Rs. 16 crores. Pooran became the fifth most expensive player in the history of IPL despite a decent performance in previous seasons.

Pooran is the incumbent skipper of the West Indies team. He was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2022 season for Rs. 10.75 crores but was released after a below-expectation display.

6. Yuvraj Singh (2015) Rs. 16 Crores- Delhi Daredevils

Astonishing all-rounder Yuvraj Singh became the highest Indian engrossed player in the history of IPL after the Delhi Daredevils franchise bought the star for a breathtaking amount of Rs. 16 crores. Yuvraj was showing signs of power-hitting after his comeback from the national team after which he bagged an astounding price for his services.

Yuvraj was previously picked by RCB in 2014 for Rs. 14 crores but was released later after an inconsistent stint. Struggling Yuvraj also failed in his efforts to perform for Delhi and was released ahead of the 2016 season. He was subsequently picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians who eventually won the trophies in 2016 and 2019 respectively.

7. Pat Cummins (2020)  Rs. 15.5 Crores- Kolkata Knight Riders

Ace Australian paceman Pat Cummins stood as the most expensive player at the IPL Auctions for the 2020 edition. Kolkata Knight Riders grabbed the tall pacer for a glorious amount of Rs. 15.5 crores. Cummins performed convincingly for KKR as he scalped many wickets and played vital knocks at the death.

Cummins was released by KKR ahead of the 2022 season and he was rebought by the Knight Riders in the auctions for nearly half of his previous price of 15.5 crores, i.e. Rs. 7.25 crores. Cummins continues to be a part of the KKR franchise.

8. Ishan Kishan (2022) Mumbai Indians- Rs. 15.25 Crores

Ishan Kishan became another Indian expensive player at the IPL auctions after Mumbai Indians bought him for a whopping Rs. 15.25 Crores at the 2022 auctions. Mumbai Indians released and bought back Kishan based on his bankable batting performance for the franchise.

His price went up after an intensive battle amongst Hyderabad, Gujarat and Punjab who were also aiming to bag the services of the prolific batsman.

Kishan had a decent stint for Mumbai in 2022 where he scored 438 runs in 14 matches. However, Mumbai finished last in the season.

9. Kyle Jamieson (2021)  Royal Challengers Bangalore- Rs. 15 Crore

Tall New Zealand paceman Kyle Jamieson was one of the costliest picks at the IPL Auctions for the 2021 season. Jamieson’s base price had soared by a staggering 20 times as he was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping Rs. 15 Crores against his base price of 75 Lakhs.

Jamieson had a satisfactory season for RCB in 2021 after which he opted out of the league in 2022. He returned in IPL 2023 and has been sold for his base price of Rs. 1 crore to Chennai Super Kings.

10. Ben Stokes (2017) Rising Pune Supergiants- Rs. 14.5 Crores

England all-rounder Ben Stokes has made his second appearance on the list. He had held a spectacular record for over three years after the then IPL franchise Rising Pune Supergiants under MS Dhoni had bought the star for a stunning price of Rs. 14.5 crores. Stokes played marvellously and provided justice for his signing since he scored a hundred and claimed vital wickets.

Rajasthan Royals bought him in 2018 for Rs. 12.25 Crores and retained him until he opted out in 2022. He finally pitched in the recently conducted auctions and grabbed Rs. 16.25 crores from Chennai Super Kings.
