Mumbai Indians won their first match of the season by beating Kolkata Knight Riders by 49 runs at Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

The After winning the toss, Kolkata Knight Riders had opted to bowl and put the Mumbai Indians to bat first. Mumbai Indians lost the opener Quinton de Kock (1) off a beautiful length delivery Shivam Mavi.

From there, skipper Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav took over and added a partnership of 90 runs for the third wicket. Rohit Sharma was in an attacking mode as he scrambled the ball all over the park and also scored his first half-century of the season.

The KKR bowlers looked rusty from the starting over especially their most expensive bid Pat Cummins leaked 49 runs in three overs.

Shivam Mavi was the pick of the KKR bowlers as he finished with the spell of 2/32in four overs including one maiden over. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma ensured his side reach a stiff total of 195/5 in 20 overs by scoring 80 runs off 54 balls.

With 196 to chase, KKR lost both its openers within the powerplay over and from there they never really showed intent in the match.

Skipper Dinesh Karthik (30) along with Nitish Rana (24) tried to build a partnership but Rahul Chahar had the better off him in the 11th over.

KKR’s dependency on Russel failed

KKR lost Nitish Rana in the very next over and from there, they never seemed to show their weightage in the match. Their most prolific batsmen Eoin Morgan and Andre Russel had a rusty day as they failed to time the bat with the ball and clear the ropes.

Subsequently, KKR lost both the batsmen and lost all hopes of winning the game. However, Pat Cummins came into bat and blasted four sixes and one boundary and score 33 runs with a strike rate of 275. But that was not enough since the match was already in Mumbai’s hands.

KKR lost the game by 49 runs with a lot of areas to keep a check on when they meet Sunrisers Hyderabad at the same venue on September 26.

While Mumbai Indians after winning this game will gain some confidence before they play against Royals Challengers Bangalore on September 28.
