The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recommended the names of Indian women’s team skipper Mithali Raj and spin specialist Ravichandran Ashwin for the revered Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. Besides, they have also sent the names of KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, and Jasprit Bumrah for the Arjuna Award, the sources in the know of developments told ANI.
“We had a detailed discussion and it was decided to send in the names of Ashwin and women’s Test and ODI skipper Mithali’s name for the Khel Ratna. We are recommending Dhawan again for the Arjuna while we will also suggest the names of Rahul and Bumrah,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by ANI.
The last date of the submission of the National Sports Award was 21st June. However, the Ministry of Youth and Sports affair later postponed the date to the end of this month. All the nominations or applications were invited for the awards from the sportsperson or coaches. The nominations are to mailed as per the guidelines of the ministry.
For the unversed, last year, Indian batting star Rohit Sharma, along with paddler Manika Batra, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, and Indian team hockey captain Rani Rampal and Mariyappan Phangavelu, was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. It was the first time when five athletes were honoured with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in a single year.
