Asia Cup 2022: Sri Lanka Cricket is expected to lose the Asia Cup hosting rights in August and September. The United Arab Emirates is increasingly establishing itself as a viable option. The BCCI has expressed concern about the issue, according to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). SLC is also concerned that if Asia Cup is shifted, they will lose USD 6 million.
“BCCI has raised concerns about civil unrest in the country and if the tournament is interrupted, we would lose a sum to the tune of US$ six million. However, we indicated that protests around the country against the government have been peaceful. We are keeping our fingers crossed” a Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) official told The Island.
Reasons why UAE can host the Asia Cup:
- The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has prepared a Plan B in response to the island nation’s prolonged economic crisis, which has spurred widespread protests.
- In recent years, the UAE has become a cricketing hotspot for both international and IPL matches.
- It has successfully hosted two seasons of the IPL as well as the T20 World Cup.
- Even the 2018 Asia Cup, which saw a Rohit Sharma-led India emerge victorious, was held in the UAE.
The ACC gave the tournament to Sri Lanka as per their turn from August 27 to September 11 with qualifiers beginning on August 20 at their Annual General Meeting in Colombo on March 19. The ACC President Jay Shah has previously stated that the final decision on the Asia Cup would be made on the day of the IPL 2022 Finals.
The Sri Lanka Cricket post had designated Colombo and Kandy as the event’s host cities, as well as RPS and Pallekele as the event’s two sites. Sri Lanka has not hosted a multi-nation competition, since hosting the 2012 T20 World Cup.
