AUS vs BAN: Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade will be replacing regular captain Aaron Finch to lead the Australian squad for Australia versus Bangladesh five-match T20I series. The series will commence in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Aaron Finch left the Australian bio-secure bubble to fly back home from Barbados last month for a minor surgical procedure on his injured right knee. In the absence of the captain and the vice-captain Pat Cummins, Alex Carey took charge of the captaincy in the recently concluded ODI series against West Indies, which the team won by 2-1 and gained 20 out of 30 World Cup Super League Qualifying points.
Finch is expected to return to the side for the upcoming T20 World Cup that will take place later this year. However, he hasn’t been ruled out of the squad for the Bangladesh series.
The 33-year old became the 11th man to lead Australia in the T20 format when Finch missed a home game against India last summer while Cummins was being rested. Wade has a rich experience of captaincy at the domestic level, having captained Victoria, Tasmania, and the Hobart Hurricanes. He would also be keeping the wickets in the series.
“I’m obviously wicketkeeping so the distance between the bowler and myself is a lot greater and that means there’s a lot more responsibility on the individual,” Wade told reporters from Dhaka.
“When you come in and take over from someone it’s just about giving the ability for those guys to really take ownership of their game and at the top of the mark, they need to execute.”
Finch joins the group of absentees for the series. Steve Smith was not able to recover from his elbow injury. Cummins and David Warner pulled out to spend time with their families. Some other IPL-bound players, including Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson have also pulled out of the series.
With Wade taking charge of the captaincy, and all the absentees from the squad, there have been slight changes in the squad.
The Australian squad arrived in Dhaka on a charter flight from Barbados last week on Thursday. Upon arrival, the entire squad underwent an isolation period of three days. They began their training on Sunday evening.
