Cricket Australia (CA) on Wednesday announced a 19-player squad for their upcoming South Africa tour. Australia is scheduled to play a three-match Test series against the Proteas starting next month.
The Australia squad has included five uncapped players in the squad while dropping veteran player Matthew Wade. Wade didn’t warn a place in the squad for failing to leave much of an impression with his 123 runs at an average of 21.26 in the entire four-match Test series. Australia lost the series to India 2-1.
The uncapped players include South Australia keeper Alex Carey, fast bowlers Sean Abbott, Michael Neser and Mark Steketee, and leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson.
However, Wade has been named in the 18-player Australia T-20 squad that will tour New Zealand.
“When presented with the challenging task of selecting two concurrent Australian men’s squads for overseas tours, we picked our first-choice Test squad given the importance of the proposed series against South Africa,” Australia Head Selector Trevor Hohns said.
“The squad is quite similar to that selected for the final two Tests of the recently-completed Border-Gavaskar series, with the exception of Matt Wade, who will join the Australian men’s T20I squad in New Zealand, and the addition of Alex Carey, who has been in strong form with both bat and gloves,” he added.
The schedule of the three-match Test series hasn’t been prepared yet due to Australia’s concurrent tour of New Zealand for their T20I competition. The cricket governing of both Australia and South Africa are still discussing the dates for the series.
