Australian selectors have named an 18-player squad for the next month’s multi-format Australia vs India series. The squad is without veteran star bowlers Megan Schutt and Jess Jonassen. The squad will be captained by Meg Lanning with Rachel Haynes as her deputy.
World’s top-ranked ODI bowler, spinner Jess Jonassen has been ruled out of the tour due to a stress reaction in her lower leg. On the other hand, swing bowler Megan Schutt, the second-ranked ODI bowler, pulled out of the tour citing personal reasons. Earlier, Belinda Vakarewa also made herself unavailable for similar reasons.
The squad has handed maiden call ups to Queensland batter Georgia Redmayne and 19-year-old NSW fast bowler Stella Campbell. Jonassen’s absence could make way for Sophie Molineux to return to the playing XI.
Maitlan Brown, who missed out on the New Zealand tour in March and April, has been recalled into the squad, while Annabel Sutherland also marks her return.
“We’re fully supportive of the requests from Belinda and Megan to not be considered for selection and will continue to work with them to ensure they have the appropriate support,” National Selector Shawn Flegler said.
“As the leader of the bowling attack, Megan’s absence will provide the opportunity for someone else to play the type of role she has so well over a lengthy period.
“Jess is another big loss and will be disappointed to miss out, but she’s another one that’s worked hard over the winter and with a long summer ahead, her focus will be to get herself right with a lot of cricket left in the season.”
Australia’s multiformat series against India comprising three ODIs, one Test, and three T20Is, starts on September 19.
