Australian women team on Saturday defeated the White Ferns by 17 runs in the first match of the T20I series. The hosts returned to the international cricket with a win after the T20 World Cup triumph.
After winning the toss, the White Ferns opt to field first as Beth Mooney and Alyssa Healy opened the batting for Australia.
Australia lost its openers in the batting powerplay and from there, Meg Lanning and Haynes started building a partnership. Ashleigh Gardner charged down the ground by blasting 6 fours and three sixes in her inning of 61 runs.
New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine became the leading wicket taker by finishing with 3/18 in her spell. Australia managed to reach 138/6 after the end of 20 overs.
New Zealand started the chase but lost the opener Maddy Green (5) in the fifth over. Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates scored 29 and 33 runs respectively.
White Ferns batting looked rusty as the middle-order failed miserably, leading to the loss by 17 runs as they finished on 121/7 in 20 overs.
The second T20I match will take place at the same ground on September 27.
