India’s left-arm spinner, Axar Patel is likely to play the second Test between India and England, scheduled to start from 13th February 2021. He missed out in the first Test due to a minor niggle in his knee. If sources are to be believed, he has recovered well and is set to feature in the eleven for the second Test.
Shahbaz Nadeem, who played the first Test, is likely to be dropped in favour of Axar. Nadeem, although, picked 4 wickets in the match but wasn’t too effective for a frontline spinner in the side.
“Axar had a minor knee niggle and has already started batting at the nets. He is expected to start bowling during the next couple of days. He was always first choice to play the opening Test, but it will depend on skipper Virat Kohli, head coach Ravi Shastri and bowling coach Bharath Arun,” a senior BCCI source told PTI.
Skipper, Virat Kohli also expressed his disappointment over Nadeem and Washington for not delivering the goods as far as the bowling department was concerned. Thus, Shahbaz Nadeem is likely to make way for either Axar Patel or Kuldeep Yadav.
“If you consider the fast bowlers and Ashwin, then yes, we bowled consistently and in good areas. But if Washi and Shahbaz had also bowled such economical spells, then you create more pressure, you cut out 80-90 runs from the opposition,” said Virat Kohli.
If India wants to book at a place in the finals of World Test Championship, they can’t afford to lose a single game out of the remaining three in the series. The second Test will begin on the 13th of February. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if India make a strong comeback or England exhibit another noteworthy performance in the second Test.
