BAN vs SA: Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal have made their comeback in the Test team as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) names an 18-member squad for their upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa. Bangladesh is set to tour South Africa for a three-match ODI series set to take place in Centurion starting March 18, which will be followed by a two-match Test series.
Tamim Iqbal has been named the ODI captain. Tamim has been out of action and has not played a Test match since April 2021 when the team last played against Sri Lanka in Pallekele due to his knee injury. A recuperated Tamim returned to action for playing the BCB’s one-day competition as he prepared for international cricket. He also featured the freshly concluded three-match ODI series against Afghanistan that the sie won 3-0.
Shakib Al Hasan, who had skipped the last Test of Bangladesh, has returned to the Test set-up after he went unsold at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction. He had earlier insisted that he would be making himself unavailable for the Test matches to be part of the IPL tournament, however, as he remained unsold, this paved the way for him to return to the national side.
As for the ODI side, the board has decided to keep the squad that played against Pakistan unchanged, except for one change, which is Syed Khaled Ahmed’s addition.
“After a long time we are getting our full squad and we are excited about it,” BCB chief selector Minhajul Abedin told Cricbuzz. “The return of Shakib and Tamim will naturally boost us up in the Test format. Khaled Ahmed can bowl fast so we have included him in the ODI side.”
The Test series will form part of the next cycle of the ICC World Test Championship, while the ODI series will be part of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. Bangladesh currently sits on top of the Super League table with 10 wins from 15 matches and 100 points in the bag. They are placed seventh in the WTC points table with one win and three losses so far.
