Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is all set to miss the Bangladesh tour of South Africa, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed on Wednesday. The all-rounder has been “rested” from international cricket till April 30, after BCB accepted his plea for a break for mental fitness.
“As far as I am concerned, the mental and physical condition that I am in right now, it is not possible for me to play international cricket. If I get a break and get back the interest then it will be easy for me to play cricket,“ Shakib had said earlier.
As result, Shakib will not partake in Bangladesh’s forthcoming ODI series against South Africa consisting of three ODIs and two Tests from March 18 to April 12
“Before leaving the country on Sunday, Shakib called me and said he is physically and mentally fatigued. He said that he isn’t enjoying cricket. I told Shakib that since you just finished the Afghanistan series, you should take a couple of days to think about it. I called him today to ask about his plans. He maintained the same position. He wants to skip the South Africa series” BCB cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus said.
Shakib was earlier named in both the ODI and Test squad of Bangladesh for the SA tour. He was among the 16-member squad named by the BCB earlier. But BCB will not name any replacement for his departure from the squad. Yunus confirmed that one of the traveling reserves would cover for Shakib’s absence in the Test series.
