Alex Hales will join Sydney Thunders for the third consecutive season ahead of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2021-22. He will be reuniting with his former national coach, Trevor Bayliss, who has will be taking up the coaching role for the next three months.
Alex Hales has performed brilliantly for the franchises for the last few months. He has been a prolific presence for them, having scored 576 runs in the 2019-20 season at an average of 38.40. In the last edition, he topped the run charts, scoring 543 runs at an average of 38.78. He hit as many as 53 sixes across two seasons.
Over the past two seasons, the big-hitter has amassed 1119 runs for the Thunder.
Alex Hales hasn’t played for England since March 2019. He failed two recreational tests for drugs in the lead-up to the 2019 World Cup. Hales has been overlooked by the national team, since. He was overlooked even during the T20 series against Pakistan when a new string team faced them amidst the covid-19 outbreak among the original group.
In the recent 2021 T20 Blast, Hales amassed 482 runs at an average of 43.81 and a strike rate of 178.51.
“The culture at Sydney Thunder, both on and off the field, is something special and I am excited to have the opportunity to be a part of it again,” Hales said. “Over the last two seasons, I have seen first-hand how this franchise is putting together a squad who believes they can win the BBL and that’s the case this summer more than ever.”
After Callum Ferguson’s departure from the team, Sydney Thunders are yet to announce their new skipper. As many as 14 players have been finalised thus far, with one more signing yet to be announced.
