Hobart Hurricanes stunned Melbourne Stars on Friday as they beat Hobart Hurricanes by 24 runs to register their second win of the BBL 2021-22 tournament. With this win, Brisbane Heat finds themselves at number five on the table. The Stars, on the other hand, have slipped to number seven position in the BBL 2021-22 points table. Both teams have now two wins each to their name in five matches.
Mathew Wade and Ben McDermott gave the team a sensational start in the first innings against the Stars. The duo wreaked havoc in the powerplay and scored at 10 runs an over. By the end of 9 overs, Hurricanes had crossed the 90-run mark. However, Mathew Wade’s wicket in the 10 over broke the momentum. He got out after scoring 39 off 27 balls. McDermott, however, kept hitting boundaries and left the Stars clueless.
Ben McDermott finally got out in the 14th over after scoring 67 off 43. Melbourne Stars then pulled things back brilliantly as they kept taking wickets thereafter. The Hurricanes didn’t get the contributions that they were looking for in the death overs. Hobart Hurricanes, however, still managed to post a decent total of 180 runs in the first innings. Nathan Coulter Nile, who went for plenty of runs in the last game, bowled a sensational spell of four overs on Friday. He took 2 wickets for 22 runs in 4 overs.
In pursuit of the total, Marcus Stoinis yet again failed to convert the start into a big score. He got out after scoring 18 off 16 balls. Glenn Maxwell (12 off 9) didn’t replicate the performance he showed in the last game. Joe Burns (22 off 17) showed some resilience but not for too long. Despite wickets falling at regular intervals, the Stars were still in the game, thanks to a brilliant knock from Joe Clarke. He made sure runs keep coming at a good pace as he amassed 52 off 40 balls.
However, his wicket in the 13th oversaw the match turn in favour of the Hurricanes. Riley Meredith and Thomas Rogers later ran through the Stars batting attack. The latter could only manage to score 156 runs in the second innings, thereby losing the game by 24 runs.
Brief Scores: Hobart Hurricanes 6 for 180 (McDermott 67, Wade 39, Russell 3-48) beat Melbourne Stars 9 for 156 (Clarke 52, Rogers 3-29, Meredith 3-32) by 24 runs
