The Melbourne Stars registered their third win of the tournament after beating Brisbane Heat by 20 runs in the BBL 2021-22 on Monday. With that win, they have now have reached the fourth spot on the BBL 2021-22 points table. Batting first, the Stars didn’t get off to a great start as they lost Stoinis and Burns inside the first two overs.
Maxwell too got out early after scoring just 2 runs to leave the team in all sorts of trouble at 16 for 3 in 3 overs. However, what followed thereafter was a brutal hitting display from Joe Clarke and Cartwright. The duo stitched a match-turning 151-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Clarke smashed 85 runs off 44 balls, while Cartwright amassed 79 off 44 balls. By the end of the 15 overs, Melbourne Stars had reached 167 runs.
Brisbane Heat, though, made a decent comeback in the final five overs as they took 5 five wickets in the last 30 balls and gave away 40 runs. Melbourne Stars finished their innings at 207 in 20 overs. Brisbane Heat too didn’t get off to an ideal start. Max Bryant (2 off 2) and Tom Cooper (8 off 3) went back to the hut inside the first over of the second innings. Ben Duckett then joined hands with Chris Lynn and led the team’s recovery.
The duo exhibited some sensational display of ball striking. Duckett was the aggressor of the two in the third-wicket partnership. He scored 54 off 35 balls and took the team one run short of 100. He, unfortunately, got out off Coulter Nile at a crucial stage in the game. Lynn, however, took the team’s total ahead with some brutal hitting display. He muscled the ball to all parts of the ground and scored 57 runs off 34 deliveries, including 3 fours and 5 sixes. Lynn’s wicket in the 13th over, however, saw Melbourne Stars getting back into the game. Wickets fell in a cluster after that and Brisbane Heat eventually fell 20 runs short of the target.
