After a member of the Melbourne Stars support team tested positive for Covid-19, today’s game of BBL 2021-22 between the Perth Scorchers and the Stars at the Marvel Stadium has been postponed.
The rest of the members of the club, including players and staff who have been in contact with the patient, have subsequently undergone another round of PCR tests and are currently awaiting their results while undergoing quarantine. The results of the tests are not expected before the scheduled start of the game.
The revised date for the game has not been decided yet and will be announced in due course.
Adam Voges, Perth Scorchers Head Coach said, “From a cricketing perspective, we’re obviously disappointed not to be playing tonight, but the health and well-being of everyone involved is our priority,” Voges said.
“This incident also reinforces how much our players and staff have sacrificed to be here.
“We’ll keep our minds on the task at hand, readjust over the next couple of days and prepare for whatever comes next.”
Australia has been hit by a fresh wave of the Coronavirus pandemic, with over 17,000 new cases reported in the populous states of Victoria and New South Wales on Wednesday. In Sydney, the league’s administration had to deal with several staff members contracting the infection.
Due to border limitations in the state of Western Australia, this game, which was originally planned to be played in Perth, was previously shifted to Melbourne. This match’s rescheduled date has yet to be set.
Speaking of their performances in BBL 2021-22 so far, the Perth Scorchers, after losing their last game they played against Sydney Thunder, which is their first loss in the tournament so far, is leading in the second position in the points table. Melbourne Stars, on the other hand, are in sixth place after winning three games out of the six matches they have played.
