After India reached the ICC Women’s World T20 finals in Australia in 2020, there was a lot of discussion about having a women’s IPL. However, the Women’s IPL could only find a place in the negotiations as there was no concrete plan to run it. On the other hand, the successful IPL 14 years ago has also failed to spark interest among the relevant authorities in establishing the Women’s IPL. Finally, on Friday, the BCCI woke up and decided to continue with the Women’s IPL from next year.
So, the wait is over for all those female cricket fans who were eager to see the Women’s IPL. On March 25, the BCCI proposed a six-member Women’s IPL starting next year. During a meeting of the IPL Executive Council in Mumbai, it was decided that the annual T20 six-team tournament would start next year.
Currently, there are three teams that are part of the Women’s T20 Challenge, sometimes called the Women’s IPL. It is known that the first choice will be given to existing IPL franchises. If these IPL franchises are interested in floating a group of women they can continue to do the same. If not, the BCCI will invite foreign parties to own the rights. However, the IPL of the six teams will be a thing of the past. This year, there will be a T20 Challenge for three women’s teams as it was played in 2019 and 2020.
Prior to the BCCI announcement, Cricket West Indies then announced the three-team women’s league and CPL (Caribbean Premier League). Apart from the Cricket West Indies, the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) has also announced similar programs. With the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) enjoying incredible success in Australia, it was almost time for BCCI to have the Indian T20 women’s league. The BCCI chief executive recently told Cricbuzz that it was the board’s responsibility to start a women’s league, regardless of when he would return to the tournament.
