Dates for the women’s T20 cricket competition at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games have been announced by the organisers. The eight-team contest will take place from July 29 to August 7 at Edgbaston.
The group-stage matches of the T20 competition will take place till August 4, and the semi-finals will happen on August 6. The playoffs and the final for the third place (bronze medal) will take place on August 7.
“With 11 days of swimming and diving, 8 days of cricket, 8 days of gymnastics and 7 days of athletics, including the marathon, the summer of 2022 is set for a spectacular home Games,” the official website of Birmingham 2022 stated.
“The Birmingham 2022 competition schedule features more medal events for women than men for the first time in Commonwealth Games history, as well as a fully integrated para-sport programme.”
This is the second instance in the history of the Commonwealth Games that cricket will also be contested. However, what makes Birmingham Commonwealth Games historical is that it is the first time that women’s cricket will also be played in the Commonwealth Games. The same holds for the T20 format of the game.
The qualifiers of the competition include Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, England, and country from the West Indies. Except for England, the other nations to qualify were determined based on the T20I rankings on April 1, 2021.
Cricket is the first event to announce its qualifiers for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) had announced the names of the qualifiers for the event that made a re-entry in in the marquee competition for the first time since 1998.
the winners of a qualifying event to be held by January 31, 2022 will get the eighth spot in the tournament. The 2022 Commonwealth Games will see the participation of 4,500 athletes from 72 nations and territories. The revered event will get underway from July 28 to and played it August 8, 2022.
