Former New Zealand fast bowler James Franklin has been added as the assistant coach of Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred. He would be joining Daniel Vettori, who is the head coach of the side.
Reports have suggested that Andrew McDonald will be not be travelling to the UK due to the current global issues caused by Covid-19. In his absence, Daniel Vettori will take up the role of the men’s interim head coach.
“It was a really hard decision not to travel over this summer and I’m extremely sad that I won’t be there in person to coach the team. I’ll be doing everything I can to give advice and support to Daniel and his team and I’m already looking forward to playing a role in person next season,” said Mc Donald.
Daniel Vettori will be supported by Alex Gidman and James Frankin, Franklin, who featured in 110 ODIs, 38 T20Is and 31 Tests between 2001 and 2013. The trio will form the coaching staff of Birmingham Phoenix.
“I feel really honoured to be asked to step up and take the reigns from Andrew this year. We’ll continue to communicate regularly and Andrew’s advice will be vital to our success. Our squad looks really strong and we want to build a winning team and hopefully bring The Hundred trophy to Birmingham,” said Daniel Vettori.
The upcoming hundred tournament will see the participation of five Indian women cricketers, namely Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Deepti Sharma.
Shafali Verma is currently the number one T20 batswoman and recently joined Birmingham Phoenix as a replacement for Sophie Devine.
