White Ferns has named a 13-player squad for their upcoming three-match ODI series against England women. The squad includes two debutants, Northern Districts’ all-rounder Brooke Halliday and Auckland spinner Fran Jonas.
The two players have already made a name for themselves to earn their call-ups in the White Ferns squad. Halliday is the second-highest run-scorer of the one-day Hallyburton Johnstone Shield while Fran Jonas, who started playing in 2019, is the fourth-highest wicket-taker of the one-day game.
“Brooke and Fran both deserve their call-ups on the back of the strong domestic form,” WHITE FERNS Head Coach Bob Carter said.
“Brooke’s done a superb job at the top of the order for the Spirit and offers a point of difference as a left-hander.
“Fran’s an exceptional talent who’s proven she can foot it with our top players. It’s exciting to add a left-arm spinner to our squad and the balance that offers our bowling attack.
“This is a great chance for them to come in and develop their games. We’ve selected them for a reason and look forward to welcoming them into the group,” Carter added.
“We’ve seen in international cricket that left-arm spinners are particularly effective, so we know that she’s going to be a real threat there,” White Ferns captain Sophie Devine said on Fran’s selection.
All-rounder Frankie Mackay has also made her return to the squad for playing against England after recovering from her injury, that she sustained while playing against India in 2019.
The England team started training in Queenstown after completing their 14-day mandatory quarantine period in Christchurch.
The two teams will play two warm-up matches on Tuesday and Thursday before the start of their series on February 23 at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
