The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and the Cricket West Indies (CWI) will launch a T10 tournament, named “The 6ixty”. The organisers have hoped that the tournament can become a quarterly event and has the potential to be staged around and beyond.
The inaugural season is set to be played from 24th August to 28th August 2022 in St. Kitts prior to the Caribbean Premier League season. As many as six men’s teams will be taking part in the competition and three women’s teams will also be taking part as well.
Notably, the rules are different from the other leagues in the world. If as many as 6 wickets fell in an innings, then the team will be termed as all-out. Each innings will have 60 deliveries to play and if the team bowls slow then one fielder will also be reduced from the field.
The first 30 balls will be bowled from one end, while the other 30 deliveries will be bowled from a different end.
In an official statement released by Caribbean Premier League, Ricky Skerritt, President of Cricket West Indies, said: “THE 6IXTY has come about because of a close collaboration between CPL and CWI which is the way forward. I am really excited about the innovation, excitement and entertainment that it is going to bring to the fans.”
Pete Russell, CPL’s CEO, said: “This is a hugely exciting moment for both CPL and Cricket West Indies as we create a tournament that will see cricket fans brought closer to the game. There will be world-class men’s and women’s cricketers taking part in a fantastic event for the Caribbean and this combined with cutting-edge innovations, signals a great moment for all fans of West Indian cricket.”
