The Indian cricket fraternity lauded Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu after she became the first Indian to win an Olympic medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu created history on Saturday after becoming the first Indian to win a medal in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2021. She won India a silver medal in the 49 kg weightlifting category. She was India’s one of biggest hope in the Rio Olympics. However, she exhibited an underwhelming performance, failing to secure a medal.
Come 2021, Mirabai Chanu has become the first Indian to win a medal at the biggest stage. With that, she has become the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic medal.
While Mirabai Chanu won silver, China’s weightlifter Zhihui Hou claimed the gold medal, while Indonesia’s Windy Cantika Aisah won the bronze medal. She lifted 202 kg in the women’s 49 kg category, while the gold medalist Zhihui Hou lifted a total of 210 kg.
At the Tokyo International Forum, the 26-year started with an 84kg lift in her first attempt in the snatch segment. Later, the Indian ace improved with an 87kg lift that put her in an advantageous position in the competition. But Mirabai’s momentum was cut short once Hou Zhihui hit her strides with an 88kg lift in her first attempt. Hou Zhihui then set a new Olympic record in the snatch at 94kgs in her third lift.
