Cricket Ireland on Monday suspended the training session of both the men and women team after a women cricketer tested positive for COVID-19.

The players of both the teams have been asked to stay indoors until the final results of the players is out by this week. The entire men team will also undergo the COVID-19 tests “as soon as possible” as a precautionary measure.

Both men and women team is currently in Dublin practicing for their upcoming international fixtures early next year. This comes days before the men’s team is due to departure for Abu Dhabi for the series against UAE and Afghanistan.

“If this test result returns negative we believe the Dublin-based men’s players can resume training to prepare for our upcoming tour to the UAE.”

“We were alerted to a positive Covid-19 test result in the women’s performance squad on Sunday and implemented requirements under our Covid-19 protocols,” said Mark Rausa, head of sport science, physiotherapy and medical services for Cricket Ireland.

“This included calling an immediate halt to all strength and conditioning, and cricket skills sessions, for both the men’s and women’s Dublin-based training groups pending the results of further testing.

“The Covid-19 protocols we have in place for indoor training are extremely rigorous, however, we are practising a safety-first and player health approach to our operations, and will update the players as information becomes available about testing outcomes and the hopeful resumption of training as soon as safely practicable.”

Ireland women as slated to face Scotland women at the La Manga Club was also called off due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the region.
