With International Cricket Council (ICC) showing its interest in multi-sport events, it is likely that they will include cricket in the 2023 Africa Games with a motto to grow the game further.
The Africa office of cricket governing body has been in talks with the local organizing committees in Ghana and proposed the inclusion of cricket in the mega event. Officials from the ICC, the Ghana Cricket Association and the Ghana Ministry of Sports have been visiting the venues proposed to host the game in order to check the required facilities for the game to be organized well.
Although there is no confirmation to include cricket in the 2023 Africa Games yet, the proposal has received an immensely positive response and the officials are considering the possibility to go forward with the proposal.
ICC is regularly looking for and creating opportunities for the game to grow both in terms of competition and its commercial opportunities. These actions of the body has been particularly beneficial for women’s cricket as it has evidently increased its popularity. Just recently, ICC successfully included women’s cricket in the Commonwealth Games of 2022.
The ICC Associate members have also been eyeing the Olympics to include the game as they feel that it will boost the popularity of the game and also provide it greater exposure for the sport as more nations will come forward to host the game in their own countries, increasing the public funding.
