Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced that the Momentum One-Day Cup on Saturday, January 9. The board released the fixtures on Sunday.
The tournament will comprise of 15 matches. The matches will be held at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom, in a bio-secure environment (BSE).
Six franchises- Hollywoodbets Dolphins, Momentum Multiply Titans, VKB Knights, The Imperial Lions, Six Gun Grill Cobras, and Warriors will compete in the 50-over competition. The six teams have been divided into two pools comprising of three teams each.
Hollywoodbets Dolphins, Momentum Multiply Titans, VKB Knights have been allotted in Pool A, while The Imperial Lions, Six Gun Grill Cobras and Warriors have been allotted in Pool B.
Pool A matches will be played from January 9 to January 14. On the other hand, Pool B matches will take place from January 29 to February 5.
In order to contain the transmission of COVID-19, the number of matches has been reduced and the number of venues has been restricted to one. Initially, the teams were decided to play a round of cross-pool matches, but now it has been decided that the top two teams of both the pools will face each other in the semi-finals and the winners of each match will eventually make it to the final.
CSA Director of Cricket Graeme Smith, confirming the news, said, “It is great to be able to reaffirm that the Momentum One-Day Cup is going ahead this summer. It is the first limited-overs competition of the season and the respective franchises are raring to get going following a couple of weeks out of competitive action.
“It is unfortunate that we have to reduce the number of matches being played and move the entire competition to one venue, but the restrictions need to be put in place to ensure the tournament goes ahead in a safe environment in accordance with Government regulations.”
All the matches will be broadcasted on SuperSport to give the fans access to domestic cricket so that they can witness the local talent, as per the CSA director.
“Cricket South Africa is also pleased to confirm that all 15 matches will be televised live on SuperSport. With both our domestic and international tournaments currently being played behind closed doors, there is a strong appetite for live cricket.”
