The new Ahmedabad-based Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise have unveiled its team name on Wednesday, February 9 ahead of the IPL 2022 auction this weekend in Bangalore. The franchise would be known as Gujarat Titans.
Last October, CVC Capital Partners (Irelia Company Pte Ltd) purchased Titans, one of two new entrants to the IPL aside from Lucknow Super Giants. Before the auction, the franchise had three players on its roster: Hardik Pandya (captain), Rashid Khan, and Shubman Gill.
All three players will be joining their second IPL squad, with Rashid joining from Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gill joining from Kolkata Knight Riders, and Pandya joining from Mumbai Indians. Pandya will also be leading an IPL franchise for the first time.
The Titans’ coaching team has also been finalised, with Ashish Nehra (head coach), Gary Kirsten (mentor and batting coach), and Vikram Solanki (director of cricket). The three had previously worked together with Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which is the world’s largest cricket stadium, will be the Titans’ home ground.
“We want this group to achieve great things for Gujarat and its many passionate fans, which is why we have chosen the name Titans,” Siddharth Patel, a partner at CVC, said in a release on Wednesday.
“As we approach the league’s mega auction, we are confident that we will be able to put together the right combination of players going into the new season. We want individuals that are not only highly skilled but who are inspired to be Titans of the game.”We look forward to starting on our journey with the passion and support of the people of Gujarat, and hope to inspire and win over new fans from all over India and the world.”
The Titans would have INR 52 crore (USD 7 million) in their bank account for the auction, after spending INR 38 crore (USD 5.1 million) on Pandya (INR 15 crore), Rashid (INR 15 crore), and Gill (INR 8 crore/USD 1.07 million approx.).
