Dale Steyn is in line for taking over his debut coaching role in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as the franchise has invited the former Proteas pacer to be their bowling coach, and he is looking forward to a new chapter in the IPL. The franchise is anticipated to make an announcement next week unless the talks breakthrough at the last minute.
Steyn, who has 95 IPL games under his belt, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in August, including franchise events, bringing down curtains to a 17-year long illustrious career.
With the departure of mentor VVS Laxman, head coach Tom Moody, and batting coach Brad Haddin in the offseason, the Sunrisers Hyderabad are undergoing a transformation in the staff pool. Following head coach Trevor Bayliss and batting coach Brad Haddin left after the 2021 season, the team sought new coaching staff members. After taking the position of head of the National Cricket Academy from Rahul Dravid, Laxman had to step down as the team’s mentor (NCA).
With 439 wickets in 93 Tests at an average of 22.95, the South African is regarded as one of the best fast bowlers of all time. He will be working alongside Tom Moody, who will take over as the franchise’s head coach. Steyn has 97 wickets in the IPL, having played 125 ODIs (196 wickets) and 47 T20Is (64 wickets). He played for SRH from 2013 to 2015. He has also represented Deccan Chargers, Gujarat Lions, and Royal Challengers Bangalore. He did not respond to the message, but an IPL person familiar with the situation confirmed talks.
Meanwhile, Hemang Badani, a former Indian and Tamil Nadu all-rounder is also expected to join the coaching staff of the Hyderabad club.
The franchise had a disappointing IPL 2021 campaign. The franchise is one of only two teams to have retained two players ahead of the mega auction.
