Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Thursday named a 21-member squad for Momentum Proteas training camp set to prepare for the home One-Day International series against West Indies. The series comprising of four matches will commence on January 28 and run till February 06.
Skipper Dane van Niekerk has been axed from the selected squad owing to an ankle injury, which will keep her out of action for at least three months, CSA stated in an official release. The injury will also see her miss out on the upcoming West Indies tour and the 50-overs 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup that will be hosted in New Zealand in March.
Niekerk sustained a fracture in her left ankle after accidentally slipping on a wet surface at home last week. According to the Proteas team doctor, her injury does not require any surgery but will be regularly monitored. The doctor added that the injury is a “stable fracture with minimal displacement” and will take about 12 weeks to recover.
Although the team will be without their skipper, the squad has a sturdy lineup featuring Shabnim Ismail, Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, and ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year nominee, Lizelle Lee.
The mix also includes uncapped player Delmari Tucker, Raisibe Ntozakhe, all-rounders, Chloe Tryon and Sune Luus, as well as seamer Masabata Klaas and wicket-keeper Trisha Chetty.
Convenor of Selectors Clinton du Preez said: “We are delighted to come together as a group again in the New Year to prepare for the West Indies Tour and most importantly for the upcoming World Cup.
“This is a great opportunity for the coaches to work with this strong group of players and strategically set out the plan for the upcoming series and then move into the World Cup.
“Losing Dané is massive for the team and the country, we will sorely miss her leadership and all-round cricket abilities. I would like to wish her all the best with her recovery and a smooth and seamless return to the national team.
“This brings about an opportunity for another player within the pipeline,” du Preez added.
The 21-member squad will enter the bio-secure bubble for a 10-day training camp on Friday. Momentum Proteas will then first take on the Caribbean in a warm-up match that will take place on January 25.
