Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria feels that poor captaincy from Shikhar Dhawan led to India’s defeat in the third and final T20 international against Sri Lanka on Thursday. He reckoned that India should have bowled first, given the fact that they had a long tail and less number of batsmen. In a video on his Youtube channel, he explained that India could have restricted Sri Lanka to a low total had they bowled first. The batsmen then would have an idea on how to go about the run-chase.
“When you have Bhuvneshwar Kumar batting at No.6, why didn’t you win the toss and opt to bowl first? The wicket at Premadasa helps spinners and you could have tried to bowl first and restrict Sri Lanka to under a hundred. When you have such a long bowling line-up, there is an advantage if you bowl first and restrict the opposition. It was poor captaincy from Dhawan,” Danish Kaneria asserted.
Kaneria further criticized India batsmen for gifting their wickets away to W Hasaranga, who took four wickets in the match conceding just nine runs. The Pakistan spinner feels that the batsmen could have played him more carefully and rather take on the other bowlers. W Hasaranga picked four wickets in that match and was also adjudged the Player of the match.
“Hasaranga was brilliant, but the Indian batsmen played a lot of awkward shots. Hasaranga demolished the Indian batting. He proved why he is the No.2 ranked T20I bowler. But I think the batsmen gifted wickets to him. If they would have played him carefully and knocked him around for singles if they would have scored 130-140 with the kind of bowlers they had, they could have been more competitive,” Danish Kaneria signed off.
Sri Lanka won the third T20 international by 7 wickets and thereby won the series 2-1.
