After a successful inaugural season, England’s The Hundred tournament is all set to return for a second edition as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Thursday (January 27) released the schedule for The Hundred 2022.
The 100-ball tournament that launched in 2021, is set to roll out on August 3 with a blockbuster clash between defending champions of the men’s tournament, Southern Brave, and Welsh Fire at the Welsh Fire in Southampton. The Women’s touranament will kick-off on August 11 at Kia Oval.
As for the player draft of the tournament, each men’s team had a 15-player roster. There was one England red-ball contract player and 14 Drafted players in each of the 15 teams. A maximum of three foreign players were allowed for each team.
The men’s team selection for The Hundred would be a two-step process, The England player allocation and Player Retention Window and The Hundred Draft 2022.
There are 20 centrally contracted England men’s players. Four of them can be kept as domestic players. Moeen Ali, Eoin Morgan, Adil Rashid, and Jason Roy are among them.
Some players may be granted an exemption to miss the competition, as they were in 2021.
The clubs can then decide whether or not to keep the remaining players. No side is allowed to keep more than two England-signed players.
In the meanwhile, the detention period has been extended until the middle of February.
Men’s teams are allowed to keep up to ten players. Each team has the option to keep any domestic or international player that signed a contract with them in 2021. For the Vitality Wildcard Draft, each team must reserve one of their £30,000 in their kitty.
The Hundred’s retention window is currently open. Men’s squads can retain up to 10 players in a window that will run until the middle of February. Teams can keep any local or international player that signed a deal with them in 2021. The Draft date will be announced at a later date, although it will most likely be in late March.
The date of the draft is yet to be announced for which the selections will be made in draw order, with each team taking turns filling in the holes in their respective pay ranges.
A reserve price will be assigned to each player that joins the Draft pool. However, if a team wants to splash the cash and pay more for a player than his reserve price, they may.
Each team will get to make one more selection after the player draft. This is the Vitality Wildcard, which lets teams to select an additional player closer to The Hundred 2022’s start date.
As for the selection of the women’s team, it will also be a two-step process. Ahead of the draft, players get to roll-over their contracts, and for players not rolling-over their contract, get to enter the selection pool.
