ENG vs IND 2021: England seamer Stuart Broad has been ruled out of the remaining matches of the ongoing five-match Test series against India. Broad was ruled out owing to a tear to his right calf that he sustained during the warm-up on Tuesday afternoon on the eve of the second Test at Lord’s.
He underwent an MRI scan in London on Wednesday at lunchtime which revealed the tear. Earlier in the day, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) named Lancashire seamer Saqib Mahmood in the squad as cover for Broad. The pacer has played seven ODIs and nine T20Is for England and is now in contention of making his debut in Tests in the match at Lord’s on Thursday. He has featured in 22 first-class games and has picked up 65 wickets at an average of 26.30 with one five-wicket haul to his name.
This comes as a huge blow for the team, which is already depleted. They are without all-rounder Ben Stokes and injured fast bowler Jofra Archer.
Stuart Broad, one of England’s most effective pacers, picked up the solitary wicket in the visitors’ second innings of the first Test at Trent Bridge. He returned overall figures of 88-1 in the rain-marred match.
In yet another jolt to the team, it is likely to be without the services of Broad’s partner James Anderson in the second Test, who is the frontline bowler of the team. Anderson sustained a quad injury recently and the medical staff is engaged in ensuring his recovery as soon as possible.
If Anderson were to miss out on the next game, it will put the hosts in a tight spot. He scalped four of the most vital wickets in the first innings of the game at Trent Bridge– KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, and Shardul Thakur, conceding 54 runs. If Anderson is ruled out of the second Test of ENG vs IND 2021 Pataudi Trophy, it will make way for Mahmood to mark his debut in Test cricket.
