ENG vs NZ: England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced their 15-member squad for their upcoming T20I series against the White Ferns beginning on Wednesday, September 1 at Chelmsford.
The board has handed maiden call ups to the Southern Vipers duo Maia Bouchier and Charlie Dean, their only two additions to the squad which defeated India by 2-1 in the T20I last month.
Both the players were seen in action during the recently concluded inaugural season of England’s ‘The Hundred’ tournament. Bouchier represented the Southern Brave side that reached the final of the 100-ball tournament. She faced only 64 balls in the tournament and contributed 92 runs at a brilliant average of 30.66 and a strike rate of 143.75 in the middle-order.
On the other hand, all-rounder Dean represented London Spirit in the tournament. The 20-year old is the leading wicket-taker for the Southern Vipers in this year’s Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy with 10 scalps in four matches. She also gave a stand out performance in the recent practice game against the White Ferns. During the game, she conceded just 29 runs in her ten-over spell while picking up one wicket and also contributed 22 runs with the bat.
While Dean clinched 10 wickets, 22-year old Bouchier averaged 91 with the bat to help Southern Vipers win their first three games in this season’s Charlotte Edwards Cup.
Senior players Kate Cross and Lauren Winfield-Hill will miss out on the selection for the T20I series.
Head Coach Lisa Keightley said: “We’re looking at more players than ever before, which is so exciting.
“In the past selection meetings have by necessity been quite focused on the Centrally Contracted group, but the fact that so many other players are sticking their hand up and pushing for selection is testament to the progress the domestic structure is allowing the women’s game to make.
“We’re seeing improvements across the board, and there were a number of young English players who also shone in The Hundred, which bodes really well for the future.
“This is another big series for us, and I want the team to continue from where they left off in the series win over India.”
England T20I squad: Heather Knight (c), Tammy Beaumont, Maia Bouchier, Katherine Brunt, Freya Davies, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Tash Farrant, Sarah Glenn, Amy Jones (wk), Nat Sciver (vc), Anya Shrubsole, Mady Villiers, Danni Wyatt
The three-match Vitality International Twenty20 series will conclude on September 9, which will then be followed by a five-match Royal London ODI series starting September 16, for which England will name their squad in due course.
