ENG vs SL: England has added Somerset batsman Tom Banton to their squad for Sunday’s final ODI match against Sri Lanka in Bristol. The 22-year-old has been called up as a backup since Dawid Malan had to leave the group citing personal reasons. The team is also without the services of Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes, both of whom are recovering from their injuries.
Subsequently, Banton, who played an explosive knock of an unbeaten century (in 47 balls) in the Somerset vs Kent game on Monday, leading the team to a 10-wicket win, will miss their derby in the Blast against Gloucestershire on Thursday evening. Furthermore, he will also miss out on their home fixture against Middlesex on Friday.
The 22-year-old Banton has played six ODIs and nine T20Is for England, his last being the match against Ireland in Southampton on August 04, 2020.
Banton would have joined the squad for the second ODI, scheduled to take place today (July 1) at the Kennington Oval. However, The current bio-security restrictions in place causes a delay in getting the replacement players into the camp. Therefore, he will not join up for the second game and will head straight to Bristol instead for the third and the final ODI.
After winning the first ODI at Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street by five wickets, England has taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series and are now ready to take on Sri Lanka at The Oval in a day-night game on Thursday.
