ENG vs WI 2022: England’s two most experienced pacers James Anderson & Stuart Broad have been left out of the upcoming Test series against West Indies. The squad for the West Indies tour slated to take place in March was announced on Tuesday. The 16-member squad for the three-match Test series against West Indies will be led by Joe Root, with no announcement of the vice-captain of the team.
The surprising development on the exclusion of the two leading wicket-takers of England Broad and Anderson comes weeks after the side’s humbling loss to Australia during Ashes 2021-22. However, former England skipper Andrew Strauss, and currently the interim director of cricket at ECB stated:
“I want to emphasize that this does not mean the end for them as England players”.
Last week, ECB had sacked Chris Silverwood as the head coach of the England team following a humiliating loss by 4-0 in the Ashes series 2021-22. Paul Collingwood was named as the interim head coach of England for the West Indies tour next month.
After announcing the squad, ECB also released a statement that said: “In respect of James Anderson and Stuart Broad, I want to emphasise this does not mean the end for them as England players. We feel that it is important to look at some exciting new bowling potential and give some added responsibility to other players who have featured previously. No one doubts the quality and experience that James and Stuart bring to the England set-up. It will be up to the new managing director and permanent head coach to decide on whether they will be involved this summer and beyond.”
England is expected to announce their squad for the West Indies tour by Tuesday while the touring party is expected to depart for Antigua on February 24.
